I’m Afraid of How My Partner Will React to My Unplanned Pregnancy

Discovering you’re unexpectedly pregnant can bring a flood of emotions, like shock, fear, confusion, and uncertainty. If you’re worried about how your partner will respond, that stress can feel even heavier. You’re not alone, and there are steps you can take to approach this conversation in a way that protects your safety and well-being.

If you have concerns that your partner might become violent or abusive when you break the news, your safety must come first. You do not have to tell them about your pregnancy in person, or at all, if it puts you in danger.

You can contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline for help making an exit plan. If you’re in immediate danger, call 911.

No Physical Danger, Just Nerves

If you’re not in danger, but are worried about your partner breaking up with you or not supporting your decision, keep reading. ALC Pregnancy Resource Center offers some tips below to help you navigate this situation. You can also talk with us in person by scheduling a free and confidential appointment.

Tip 1. Accept Change

It’s important to accept that your pregnancy will change your relationship. You cannot control how your partner will react. Whether he wants to break up, support you, or isn’t sure, you must respect that he’s an individual.

Approach the conversation with grace and openness, knowing your partner might not react as you hoped. However, his feelings may change, or he could completely surprise you with a different response.

Tip 2. Allow Him to Process

After his first reaction, let him process the pregnancy news. This is a huge moment for him too! The news of unplanned pregnancy can be especially shocking for men, and his opinions and thoughts could change as he works through his emotions.

Try to give him some space after your conversation. Even one night without texts could help him process his emotions before your next conversation.

Tip 3. Find Additional Support

Telling your partner about your pregnancy can be a nerve-racking experience, especially if you wonder about what will happen to your relationship.

However, you always have support at ALC Pregnancy Resource Center. Finding additional encouragement and resources to help you during this time can be tremendously helpful.
