What Are Common Early Pregnancy Symptoms?

Signs and symptoms vary from woman to woman, and some appear before a missed period. Some common early signs include:

• Missed or late period. For women with regular cycles, this is often the first sign. Stress, hormonal shifts, and weight changes can also delay a period, which is why a test matters.
• Nausea, with or without vomiting. Often called “morning sickness,” nausea can happen at any time of day and may start as early as two weeks after conception.
• Fatigue. Rising progesterone levels can leave you unusually tired, especially in the first trimester.
• Tender or swollen breasts. Hormonal changes can make your breasts feel sore or heavier than usual. This typically eases as your body adjusts.
• Frequent urination. Increased blood volume during pregnancy causes your kidneys to process more fluid, which means more trips to the bathroom.
• Light spotting. Implantation bleeding can occur around 10 days after conception and is often mistaken for a light period.
• Mood changes. Fluctuating hormones can affect your emotions in the early weeks.
• Food cravings or aversions. You may find that certain foods suddenly appeal to you, or that things you used to enjoy now seem unappealing.

A pregnancy test tells you whether pregnancy hormones are present. An ultrasound goes further. It can confirm how far along the pregnancy is, whether it is located inside the uterus, and whether it appears to be progressing. That information is critical for understanding your options clearly.
