What Are the Risks of Abortion?

As with every medical decision, it’s important to understand the potential impacts an abortion could have on your body before having an abortion.

The risks of abortion vary based on the type of abortion procedure you receive. Your options are determined by how far along you are in the pregnancy. ALC Pregnancy Resource Center can confirm your pregnancy and help determine what pregnancy options you are eligible for.

Our welcoming and non-judgmental team is here for you. We can discuss the specific risks and side effects associated with each abortion procedure during your appointment, but below are a few to start your research.

Medical Abortion (The Abortion Pill) Risks

Medical abortion involves two different drugs – Mifepristone and Misoprostol. According to FDA approval, only women 10 weeks pregnant or earlier are potentially eligible for this type of abortion procedure.

Mifepristone is normally taken at an abortion clinic and Misoprostol at home. Mifepristone works to block the womb from absorbing progesterone and prevent the embryo from implanting or growing. Then, Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Potential risks of medical abortion include:

  • Incomplete abortion (may need to be followed by surgical abortion)
  • Failed abortion, continuing the pregnancy
  • Heavy and prolonged bleeding
  • Digestive system discomfort
  • Infection
  • Fever

Surgical Abortion Risks

There are two types of surgical abortion. The type you qualify for will depend on how far along you are in the pregnancy. Both are invasive procedures and involve dilating the cervix; using a suction device to remove the fetus and related pregnancy tissue.

Potential risks of surgical abortion include:

  • Damage to the cervix or womb
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes
  • Scarring of the inside of the uterus
  • Uterine perforation
