How Much Does the Abortion Pill Cost?

According to the researchers at the University of San Francisco, a medication abortion usually costs around $550 when you include the physician visit.

How Does The Abortion Pill Work?

The abortion pill can not be taken after 10 weeks of gestation. The Plan B medication, otherwise known as Mifepristone and Misoprostol, is an abortive combination that blocks the pregnancy hormone progesterone, which is needed for the pregnancy to grow.

About 48 hours after taking the second pill, your body will expel the fetus and all contents from your uterus through labor-like contractions and bleeding.

What Are the Risks of the Abortion Pill?

This type of abortion comes with some risks. For one, your uterus may not expel all of its contents, which can require surgical intervention. You also may experience a hemorrhage due to heavy bleeding. An infection is also possible and will require treatment by antibiotics.

The medication can also cause nausea, cramping, vomiting, and headache. This method is contraindicated for people who use an IUD for birth control. This means taking this medication under these circumstances could put your health at risk and might even lead to death.

Is The Abortion Pill Legal in Kentucky?

In short, no. The abortion pill is not legal in Kentucky.

In March 2022  the state made new restrictions on the abortion pill that require a patient to be seen by a doctor in person before being prescribed the abortion pill.

After the Dobbs v. Jackson decision, all abortion (including use of the abortion pill) was banned in the state. Kentucky is now one of at least 19 states with restrictions that ban doctors from prescribing the abortion pill via a telehealth visit.
