 What is Medical Abortion?

Medical abortion, also known as the abortion pill, uses drugs including mifepristone and misoprostol to end a pregnancy through 10 weeks of gestation.

Like any medical procedure, medical abortion carries potential risks and complications. Knowing when to seek medical care can help protect your health.

Common Symptoms After Taking the Abortion Pill

Some side effects are common after taking the abortion pill. These may include vaginal bleeding or spotting, cramping, pelvic pain, headache, nausea, or digestive upset. Some women may also experience chills, fatigue, or mild discomfort as the pregnancy tissue passes from the body.

Although these side effects may be expected, it is important to pay attention to symptoms that become severe, worsen, or last longer than expected.

When to Call Your Doctor

You should contact your healthcare professional right away if you experience symptoms that may suggest complications. Warning signs include:

  • Heavy bleeding, such as soaking two or more pads an hour for two hours in a row
  • Severe pain in the stomach area or pelvis
  • Fever lasting more than four hours or a fever that begins days after taking misoprostol
  • Chills or body aches
  • Fast heart rate
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • Weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or feeling sick for more than 24 hours after taking mifepristone

Other symptoms that may require medical attention include dizziness, blurred vision, seizures, swelling, shakiness, unusual weakness, confusion, or fainting.

When to Go to the Emergency Room

Some complications can become serious or life-threatening and require emergency medical care. Severe hemorrhages and serious infections have been reported after medical abortion. In some cases, women required blood transfusions or treatment for severe infection.

You should go to the emergency room immediately if you experience:

  • Extremely heavy bleeding
  • Severe abdominal pain or tenderness below the waist
  • Fever greater than 100.4°F lasting more than four hours
  • Fainting
  • Fast heartbeat with weakness or severe illness symptoms
  • Signs of severe infection, even if symptoms do not seem intense
