What Do I Need to Know if I Am Pregnant in College?

Being pregnant during college likely wasn’t in your plans. However, while it’s a significant adjustment, continuing your pregnancy in college is possible.

We’ll provide must-know facts if you’re currently pregnant in college. You can also visit ALC Pregnancy Resource Center for free services and support when you need it most.

College and Pregnancy: Must-Know Facts

You Have Rights.

Any public or private colleges or universities that receive federal funds must comply with Title IX, a law prohibiting discrimination. You are entitled to continue your education even if you are pregnant or parenting.

Your school must also make reasonable adjustments during your pregnancy, such as providing a larger desk, more bathroom breaks, and elevator access. You should also receive excused absences, medical leaves, and the ability to make up missed work.

Familiarize yourself with Title IX and contact the school’s Title IX Coordinator for support.

Organizations Can Help You.

Being pregnant during college could feel like an isolating experience, but you’re not alone. Many organizations, including ours, are ready and willing to help.

If you’re not insured, consider exploring Medicaid as a potential insurance option. As a full-time student without much income, you are likely eligible for government assistance. We can help you explore the programs that might work for you.

Your Situation Will Change.

We know pregnancy or parenting during college may seem impossible. However, remember that your situation will change. After you graduate, you can find a job in your field, and your income will increase.

Your current situation as a student is only temporary. If you truly want to parent or place your child for adoption, these are viable options with the right resources.
